Respect Action Month 2006

August 2006 was Waltham Forest’s Respect Action Month. This saw the borough working with the police and the probation services to tackle issues from truancy, abandoned vehicles, and illegal DVD selling in Walthamstow.

Throughout the month in Walthamstow Town Square the residents were able to raise issues at the councils call to action sessions. Both Police officers and members of crime prevention agencies united with councillors and council officers to listen to what people had to say and to take action in order to resolve their problems.

We interviewed Councillor Akram and he said that the month was an opportunity for the community to take pride in its self, because respect is a two-way process, and people have to learn to respect themselves and each other.

The month ended with a 5 a side football competition with young people from all over the borough. Streetlife fm were there to entertain the crowds and conduct interviews.

To support the end of Respect Action month there were various people, such as Councillor Akram and Heid Watson chief executive of the Damilola Taylor Trust.

All the participants were extremely talented and had a wonderful time, irrespective of whether they won or not. The month has been extremely successful but this is not where it ends because respect doesn’t end when the month does, but it is an on going process.
